See below for the story of the real pink backhoe.
Marvin Linder, a design engineer for CNH and team captain for the Case Crusaders, CNH's relay for life team, came up with the idea of the pink backhoe to raise awareness about cancer.
"I once saw a pink fire truck, and I thought it was a neat idea," Linder said. "I thought why can't we do something like that to help our Relay for Life team and have more awareness of cancer in itself? I know it's pink, which represents breast cancer, but we'd like for it to represent all types of cancer."
Linder said he came up with the idea of the backhoe after his wife, Leslie, died of breast cancer in September.
"We have had many employees and family members affected by cancer over the past few years," Linder said. "I wanted to make this a big cancer push for awareness and help raise money at the same time."
With the help of donations from area suppliers, such as Riley Paint Co., which provided the pink paint, and CNH employees, who painted the backhoe, the project was completed in about six weeks.
"We started this at the end of September," Linder said. "We began getting the backhoe refurbished and had the unit decaled by Nov. 2011."
"We also had it in the Christmas Lighted parade," Linder said. "Team members also handed out pink bracelets."
The original backhoe was used for various testing before being covered in pink paint. On the loading arm, it says Case Crusaders. On the bucket of the backhoe, it has another decal that says Case Crusaders and it has a purple ribbon on the cap. The back of the backhoe has the phrase "Digging for a Cure."
